４月２５日の写真は何かと思ったらバクテリアだった。これがとんでもなくしぶといバクテリアで、その性質ゆえ NASA が興味を持っているらしい。ちょっと面白かったので説明を訳してみた。

説明：このバクテリアは別の惑星でも生き延びられるかもしれない。地球の研究室では、デイノコックス・ラジオデュランス（D. rad）は猛烈な放射線、極端な温度差、乾燥状態、遺伝毒性薬品への暴露を切り抜けて生きることができる。驚いたことに、通常は４８時間で自己の DNA を補修する能力さえ持っている。こうした好極限性微生物として知られる D. rad のようなバクテリアが NASA の興味を引いている。一つには宇宙飛行士が別世界で生き延びるのに役に立つかもしれないという理由からだ。D. rad の最近の DNA マップによって、生物学者たちがこのバクテリアの生存能力を増強し、薬物、きれいな水そして酸素を産み出す能力を持たせることができるかもしれない。もうすでに、有毒な水銀流出物の浄化に役立つように遺伝子操作されたものもある。おそらく生存している最古の生命体の一つである D. rad は１９５０年代に偶然発見された。当時食品保存技術を研究していた科学者はこのバクテリアを簡単には殺すことができなかった。上の写真はペトリ皿内で静かに成長するデイノコックス・ラジオデュランスである。
